The Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) is expected to announce the final launch date of the second spacecraft in the series of seven satellites that will form the Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS) next week.

According to Isro officials, the satellite, IRNSS 1-B, has been moved from the Isro Satellite Centre (ISAC) in Bangalore to Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh from where the launch will take place.

“Activities related to the integration of the launch vehicle, PSLV-C24, are ongoing at the moment, and the launch date is likely to be any time after end of March,” said an Isro spokesperson.

The Indian navigation system will provide civilian and military applications ranging from terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation, to visual and voice navigation for drivers. The system will also be compatible with the global positioning system (GPS) maintained by the US.

IRNSS is expected be fully operational by 2015.
